Hello everyone, last week I shared with you about protecting Taiwan's second guardian mountain - the AI industry. Yesterday was the Dragon Boat Festival, one of the four major traditional Chinese festivals. In Taiwan, the Dragon Boat Festival is also a national holiday. This year, the festival spans three days, and many people take advantage of this time to travel. For those who don't travel, they celebrate the festival at home. So today, I want to share with you how Taiwanese people celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.
Why is it called the Dragon Boat Festival?
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. In Chinese, we called “端午節”. "端" means beginning, and "午" means May. The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday dating back to the Warring States period. There was a poet who loved his country deeply, but his advice was not accepted by the king. Eventually, his country was destroyed, and he was heartbroken. He committed suicide by jumping into a river. To prevent his body from being eaten by fish, people made "zongzi," a type of food wrapped in leaves, and threw them into the river from boats, hoping that the fish would eat the zongzi instead of his body. This is also why dragon boat races are held.
How do Taiwanese people celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival?
There are many traditional activities for the Dragon Boat Festival, but in Taiwan, we don't necessarily follow all of them. Nowadays, common activities include eating zongzi, watching dragon boat races, and paying respects. Normally, I don't eat zongzi often, but on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, I always make sure to have some. Famous zongzi shops in Taiwan require reservations in advance, and people also enjoy discussing which is better, northern or southern zongzi, on the internet. On television, many cities host dragon boat races. Dragon boat racing is a challenging sport that requires strength and teamwork. Many foreign teams participate as well. For example, this year in New Taipei City, there are 27 countries represented by 98 teams, totaling 2,100 athletes. Finally, many people like to pay respects on the Dragon Boat Festival. It's believed that praying at temples on this day can bring the best financial luck.
