Hello everyone, last week I shared with you how Taiwanese people celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. Recently, a Taiwanese YouTuber named Potter King mentioned on his channel that China has recently spent a lot of money inviting Taiwanese influencers to film videos there in July as part of a "cultural infiltration" effort. Many netizens have started questioning the YouTubers who recently filmed videos in China, turning it into a "witch hunt." Many of the named YouTubers have claimed that they traveled to China at their own expense. Potter King was also found to have filmed videos in China six years ago, drawing more attention to this issue. Today, I want to discuss a strange phenomenon happening in Taiwanese society: Don’t say you traveled to China.
What is "Cultural Infiltration"?
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) wants to unify Taiwan, but unifying Taiwan does not necessarily require actual warfare. Through cultural exchanges, such as inviting Taiwanese influencers to travel to China and film positive videos, or collaborating with Taiwanese companies to produce TV dramas, the aim is to make Taiwanese people like Chinese culture and think that China is actually a good country. This way, more and more Taiwanese people would want to become "Chinese" again, which is what we call "cultural infiltration."
How does China attract Taiwanese influencers to collaborate?
Taiwanese singer R-chord posted on his Facebook a letter of invitation from Beijing Ciguang Film and Television Media Company. The letter stated that he only needed to post an article on Facebook titled "Building a New Type of Cross-Strait Relationship", then he would get many endorsement opportunities in China, with an income exceeding 10 million NTD. R-chord is a relatively controversial singer in Taiwan. Besides being a songwriter, he also made the news for using marijuana, which made him quite popular among many young Taiwanese.

My Personal View
I believe that cultural infiltration is something the CCP has always been doing, but the CCP does not represent all of China. There are many wonderful, attractive, and worthy cultural aspects in China, such as traditional Chinese medicine and the philosophies of Laozi and Zhuangzi, which I personally admire. However, the current Taiwanese society seems a bit strange. It's almost taboo to mention "China," and it's best not to tell people that you traveled there. Previously, a well-known Taiwanese YouTuber, Zhong Mingxuan, traveled to China. Despite having made many anti-China government statements, he had many positive experiences there. When he expressed his fondness for China in his videos, many people left abusive comments on his channel. I personally dislike this kind of atmosphere. I believe everyone should have independent thinking. If you fear cultural infiltration, you should train your own critical thinking rather than unjustly suspecting others. We can dislike the CCP, but we shouldn't irrationally hate "Chinese people."
