Hello everyone, last week I shared with you about the Taiwanese stock market hitting record highs, and why Taiwanese people are so fond of investing in stocks. Recently, I participated in a free walking tour course in Taichung. Through this course, not only did I get to know Taichung better, but I also discovered it's a great way to explore Taiwan. Today, I'd like to introduce free walking tours - a fantastic way to explore a city while following a guide.
What are Free Walking Tours?
Free walking tours are conducted by trained guides who introduce a city in English. Depending on the city's size, there are different routes available. Each tour usually lasts around two to three hours. However, despite being called "free," it operates on a "tip-based”. At the end of the tour, participants are encouraged to tip the guides based on their performance.
Where Can You Find Free Walking Tours in Taiwan?
In Taiwan, you can find such tours in Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. The tour I attended in Taichung was organized by Likeitformosa. They design various walking tours tailored to each city's unique characteristics. In Taichung, for instance, you can visit many buildings left over from the Japanese colonial era and learn about the city's history.
How Are Free Walking Tours Different from Regular Tours?
In my opinion, free walking tours offer a more thematic introduction compared to regular tours. While regular tours often take tourists to the most famous spots, the information may feel disjointed. On the other hand, free walking tours provide a coherent narrative, allowing participants to gain a more comprehensive understanding of an area or its history through walking.
My Personal Experience with Free Walking Tours
Having attended a course on becoming a guide myself, I realized guides need to do a lot of homework to showcase each site's unique features. They must also ensure participants remain engaged throughout the tour and are willing to tip at the end. Experiencing the free walking tour in Taichung was delightful, and I think it's a fantastic way to explore Taiwan.
Where Can You Join Free Walking Tours?
If you're interested in joining a free walking tour in Taiwan, you can check out Likeitformosa's website. They offer fixed tour times, and no prior reservation is required. Remember, though, it's a pay-what-you-want activity, so be sure to tip the guides after the tour as a token of appreciation.

This website also lists other walking tours in Taiwan that I haven't personally attended. If you're interested, you can explore those as well. Additionally, you can find walking tours worldwide on this platform:

I've also participated in free walking tours in Sydney, Australia, and I'm glad Taiwan offers similar activities. Have you ever joined a walking tour? Feel free to share your experiences with me!
