Hello everyone, last week I shared with you let's learn Chinese through the variety show and see what the Taiwanese president has been up to. This week, the Taipei Computer Show is happening. These days, instead of focusing on military exercises in China, people all over Taiwan are more concerned about the AI industry. Not only are important tech company bosses from the United States gathering in Taiwan, but many Taiwanese companies also play significant roles in the AI industry. Even the latest richest person in Taiwan has doubled his assets because of the AI industry. So today, I want to share with you Protecting Taiwan's second guardian mountains - the AI industry.
Taiwan's First Guardian Mountain
In Taiwan, we refer to TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) as Taiwan's guardian mountain. TSMC is currently the world's first and largest semiconductor foundry company. The chips in your phone and computer might be from TSMC. Because of its size, many Taiwanese people believe that with TSMC, the Chinese government wouldn't dare to attack Taiwan. Hence, we call TSMC the "guardian mountain."
Taiwan's Second Guardian Mountains
In recent years, Taiwan has started paying attention to the AI industry. The CEOs of American graphics chip company NVIDIA and semiconductor company AMD are both Taiwanese Americans. During difficult times, their companies received help from Taiwanese companies, hence the close cooperation now. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, gave a speech in Taiwan on June 2, listing a total of 43 supply chain partners in Taiwan. While many companies around the world are hesitant to invest in Taiwan due to concerns about the Taiwan Strait conflict, NVIDIA is about to establish a large design center in Taiwan, and AMD is investing 5 billion NT dollars in Taiwan to set up a research and development center. Therefore, the AI industry has become Taiwan's second guardian mountains.
My Observations
Lately, whenever I open the news, I see articles related to the AI industry, and there are many discussions online about the stocks of these companies. The restaurants Jensen Huang visited have also become very famous. Last week, one of my American students was very concerned about China's military exercises against Taiwan, especially during class he was particularly worried about me. However, living in Taiwan, nobody around me is discussing military exercises; instead, people are more concerned about which Taiwanese celebrities have said they are "Chinese people" in order to work in China. Seeing the development of the AI industry in Taiwan, I am also very excited. I believe this is a great opportunity for Taiwan, and I hope that because of these industries, Taiwan can avoid war.
