Hello everyone, last time I shared with you an unmissable cultural event in Taiwan, the Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage. As March comes to the end, there's been a Taiwanese movie that has gained immense popularity among Chinese audiences, raking in over NT$2.2 billion at the box office in China, while only making NT$50 million in Taiwan and Hong Kong combined. Today, I'd like to share with you this Taiwanese film that has become a sensation in China, "The Pig, The Snake and The Pigeon" (Chinese movie name: 周處除三害Zhōu chǔ chú sān hài). I am going to say the Chinese movie name Zhōu chǔ chú sān hài in today’s article.
What is "Zhou Chu Chu San Hai"?
"Zhou Chu Chu San Hai" is a film directed by Hong Kong director Wong Ching-po, centered around the Taiwanese underworld. The protagonist, a Taiwanese gangster hitman who believes he's terminally ill with lung cancer, decides to leave a legacy by eliminating the two criminals ranked above him before he dies. The title "Zhou Chu Chu San Hai" not only refers to the film's name but also draws from a famous historical story in China, where a man named Zhou Chu decides to reform himself after realizing he's considered a villain among people due to his association with wild beasts.
Why did "Zhou Chu Chu San Hai” critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful in Taiwan?
At last year's Golden Horse Awards, 'Zhou Chu Chu San Hai' received seven nominations, making it a highly anticipated film. However, after its release, the film failed to resonate with many audiences. It only grossed NT$50 million in Taiwan and Hong Kong combined, leading us to label it as a critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful film. This means despite its recognition at the Golden Horse Awards, which led people to anticipate its success, it didn't perform well at the box office. Personally, after watching the film and speaking with others who've seen it, I found the portrayal of the wanted criminals, possibly based on real figures, to be a unique aspect. However, in terms of content, I personally found it quite violent and not something I'd particularly want to watch again.
Why did "Zhou Chu Chu San Hai" become a hit in China?
There are various analyses online regarding the film's popularity in China, with many attributing it to the novelty of its subject matter. Given the increasingly stringent content regulations in China, films with underworld themes are rare, making "Zhou Chu Chu San Hai" stand out. Many Chinese viewers describe it as an exhilarating film, with its violence, fights, and bloody scenes being particularly appealing and uncommon in other movies.
How did "Zhou Chu Chu San Hai" manage to pass censorship in China?
The film "Zhou Chu Chu San Hai" not only surprised Taiwanese people with its excellent box office performance but also made them feel special for passing China's strict censorship. This is because Chinese films do not have age ratings, meaning it is a film that can be watched by audiences of any age. Here are the reasons analyzed by many people: First, it reflects Taiwan's social chaos. This gangster film may lead Chinese audiences to mistakenly believe that Taiwanese society is chaotic, so the authorities did not specifically prohibit it. Second, it opposes cults. Compared to Taiwan, Chinese society has much stricter control over religion and dislikes overly flourishing religious developments. Therefore, the depiction of cults in the film became a good educational material.
If you're interested in watching this film, it's available on Netflix in Taiwan, featuring renowned Taiwanese film stars and minimal use of Taiwanese dialect. Feel free to share your thoughts if you've seen it!
