Hello everyone, last week I shared with you the issue of homelessness in Taiwan. Next Monday will mark the official inauguration of Taiwan's new president, Lai Ching-te. Recently, there have been some opinion polls regarding the current president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen. Today, I'd like to share with you the public satisfaction with president Tsai Ing-wen's eight years in office.
Are People Satisfied with Eight Years of Governance?
Currently, there are two opinion polls available. According to a survey conducted by Taiwanese news media TVBS on May 8th, 42% of respondents expressed satisfaction, while 46% expressed dissatisfaction. Another survey conducted by the "Association of Chinese Elite Leadership" on May 13th showed that 58% of respondents were satisfied, while 35.5% were dissatisfied. Although the data from these two polls differ somewhat, when compared to the satisfaction ratings during the eight years of former President Ma Ying-jeou's administration, the current President Tsai Ing-wen's ratings are higher. This suggests that people are generally more satisfied than before. Both surveys indicate that Taiwanese people are more satisfied with the economy, national defense, long-term care, and pension reform, while they are less satisfied with cross-strait relations and judicial reform.
Special Aspects of President Tsai Ing-wen
As the first female president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and also the first chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party, Tsai Ing-wen holds a significant place in history as the first female head of state in the Chinese-speaking world. Moreover, when she was re-elected in 2020, she received the highest number of votes for any president since Taiwan opened up direct presidential elections in 1996. She is also the first East Asian female head of state to be re-elected, standing out in a political landscape in Asia dominated by men.
Achievements in Governance
As the first female president of Taiwan, her election broke gender stereotypes. During her tenure, Taiwan's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic left a deep impression on many. She also championed the legalization of same-sex marriage, making Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. Economically, the average annual income of Taiwanese people has increased from $23,000 to $32,000. Additionally, she actively defended Taiwan's democracy and freedom. While Taiwan lost 10 diplomatic allies during her eight years in office, cooperation with Europe and the United States has become even closer.
My Personal Feelings
Eight years is a significant period, and it's not easy to recall the differences in life in Taiwan over these eight years. However, personally, I feel that Taiwan has indeed been getting better and better. If I were to complain, there are still many things to complain about, such as unreasonable housing prices and widening wealth gaps. However, Taiwan is definitely a very convenient and safe place to live, the quality of the people is also very high. The only thing that makes me feel very insecure is the increasing likelihood of China invading Taiwan since the Ukraine-Russia conflict began. But overall, I believe Taiwan has made significant progress during these eight years.
