Hello everyone,
Last time I shared with you about the ancestral worship culture in China and Taiwan, discussing whether burning joss paper is superstition or tradition. Last Wednesday, on April 3rd at 7:58 a.m. Taiwan time, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the eastern part of Taiwan, particularly in Hualien County. It's the largest earthquake Taiwan has experienced since 1999, and as of this morning, there are still numerous aftershocks. Today, I'd like to update you on the situation following the earthquake in Hualien.
Casualties of the Hualien Earthquake
The earthquake has resulted in 13 fatalities, 1146 injuries, and 6 people are still missing. Most of the deaths and missing persons occurred in Taroko National Park in Hualien, due to landslides triggered by the earthquake. Additionally, many buildings in Hualien need to be demolished as they are no longer safe to inhabit.
Closure of Suhua Highway
Suhua Highway is the main road connecting Yilan and Hualien in eastern Taiwan. However, due to the earthquake, it's currently closed. For those traveling by car, the only route to Hualien is to detour clockwise around Taiwan from Yilan. Alternatively, taking the train is the only option to reach Hualien.

Here is a photo taken after the earthquake. Due to the severity of the damage, the park is currently closed indefinitely and may take three to five years to repair.
My Personal Experience
When the earthquake occurred, I received an earthquake alert from the Taiwanese government, and the next moment, the earthquake hit. The maximum intensity of this earthquake was magnitude 6, which usually indicates possible damage to buildings. In my city, we felt the shaking at intensity level 5 for about a minute. Compared to previous earthquakes I've experienced, I didn't feel it was particularly strong. Initially, I didn't think it would be severe, but upon seeing the news, I realized the situation was grave, especially in Hualien.
It's saddening to share such distressing news today. Earthquakes are quite common in Taiwan, so most people have resumed their normal lives. However, there are still many people in Hualien who are unable to return to normalcy. If you're planning to travel to Taiwan, it might not be suitable in the short term. I hope everyone stays safe when traveling in Taiwan.
